Creating a schedule of backups and scheduling remote archiving

Prerequisite

  • On a Windows 2008 server:
    • Folder share properties, on the Sharing tab, under Network File and Folder Sharing settings. The SMB user, or a group the user is a member of, must be specified with:
      • contributor sharing permissions
  • On a Windows 2012 server:
    • Folder share properties, on the Sharing tab, under Network File and Folder Sharing settings. The SMB user, or a group the user is a member of, must be specified with:
      • read/write sharing permissions

Procedure

On the SYSTEM menu, under the Maintenance submenu, click Scheduler.

  • To create a schedule of backups saved on the Smoothwall Filter and Firewall locally:
    1. Under the Backup schedule section, from the Day list, select the day of the week that the tasks are run.
    2. From the Hour list, select the time of day at which the tasks are run.
    3. From the Prune archives list, select how long the Smoothwall should keep archives.
    4. Click Save.
  • To schedule saving backup archives to a remote destination periodically:
    1.  Choose if you want to use the Linux SCP protocol or Windows SMB protocol to save your backup archive files.
      • To use the SCP protocol, under the Remote SCP destinations section:
        1. Click Export Public Backup Key.
        2. Install the public key on the remote SSH server. For details on how to do this, refer to the administrator's guide of the SSH server in use.
        3. Enter a meaningful Name for the destination.
        4. Specify the Username of the account on the SSH server that is used. For additional security we recommend that you don't give this user additional privileges and only allow write access to the specified Remote path.
        5. Enter the Remote path where archives are to be stored on the remote SSH server, for example: /home/mypath/.
        6. Enter the IP address of the SSH Server and the Port number used to connect to the SSH server (normally port 22).
        7. From the Transfer speed limit list, choose maximum transfer speed when automatic archiving occurs. This control is useful for preventing the automatic remote archiving system adversely affecting the performance of another network's traffic.
        8. Enter a descriptive Comment and click Add.
      • To use the Windows SMB protocol, under the Remote Windows/SMB destinations section:
        1. Enter a meaningful Name for the destination.
        2. Specify the Username and Password of the account on the server that is used. For additional security we recommend that you don't give this user additional privileges and only allow write access to the specified Remote path. The user must be a member of the Administrators group on the destination server.
        3. Enter the Server and share name of the network and network share folder where you want to save the backup archive file, for example: \\10.0.11.134\Example_content_share.
        4. Enter the Remote path where archives are to be stored on the remote server, for example: \Name_share.
        5. Enter a descriptive Comment and click Add.
    2. Under the Remote archival section:
      1. From the Day list, select the day of the week to carry out the archive.
      2. From the Hour list, select the time of day to carry out the archive.
      3. From the Archive destination list, select a destination as configured in either the Remote SCP destinations section or the Remote Windows/SMB destinations section.
      4. From the Archive profile list, select an archive profile as configured on the archives page.
      5. To turn on the archive, select the Enabled option.
      6. Enter a descriptive Comment for this archive and click Add.

Note: A local copy of the archive is also created and stored.
